Re: [BKARTS] Moskva and St. Petersburg
I've been to Moscow three times in the last 1 1/2 years. Here are some of
my favorites.
Red Square: St. Basil's Cathedral (inside also), State Historical Museum,
Kremlin State Armoury and Diamond Fund, Restaurant: #1, Red Square
Tretyakov Gallery has been mentioned--a definite must. Try for dinner at
the Cafe Pushkin near Pushkin Square.
Pushkin Museum and Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer are at the same metro
stop--both worth seeing. The cathedral is an unbelievable work of art.
All Russia Museum of Decorative-Applied and Folk Arts is one of my
favorites.
On a weekend, try Izmalovo Market, an arts and crafts bazaar. Russian
souvenirs in booth after booth. Crisp new American money is often accepted.
Slightly away from town center, but wonderful half-day or day trips--either
Kolomenskoe or Kuskovo.
More time? Walk through the Old Arbat. On Novyy Arbat is Dom Knigi, a large
bookstore with a good selection of miniature books.
In a town of 12 million, the efficient means of travel is the metro. Each
stop is an art experience in itself (sculptures, mosaics, etc.) Learn the
Cyrillic alphabet and carry a metro map in Russian as well as English. Be
aware addresses are not always easy to spot. If you can't figure out how to
cross a street due to traffic, look for an under-the-street tunnel at the
corners. Traveling with a tour group will remove some of the complications.
Individual travel is a little more challenging--but definitely worth it.
