Edition Binding
a workshop presented by Priscilla Spitler
for intermediate and experienced book binders
at the University of Iowa Center for the Book, Iowa City, Iowa.
This two-day workshop is designed to help hand binders overcome
unique problems associated with multiple or edition
binding. Beginning with a prototype case bound book time saving
steps will be introduced, including the construction and use of
jigs for more efficient and consistent production. We will cover
teamwork and planning - breaking down the edition into individual
steps in order to move books through the binding process. Dealing
with the bidding process while developing a relationship with
printers/publishers and other clients will also be
discussed. Starting with hand sewing students will work on three
mock editions (printed or blank papers, to be determined) to be
case bound - the most efficient binding structure for multiple
binding (quarter, full cloth case binding, plus a more refined ½
bound case with a rounded cloth spine and cloth corners). When
possible, the class will work together to execute the edition, as
it would be done in a working bindery. Students will be rotated to
the various steps in order to gain experience working in multiples
from sewing to lining spines to case making and casing-in. By the
end of the workshop students will receive copies of the edition
plus models of jigs and numerous handouts. They will gain the
experience of seeing how quickly a book edition can be finished and
they will learn to plan for efficient and consistent work while
appreciating the value of repetition.
