[BKARTS] 12 annual New Jersey Book Arts Symposium Invitation
Greetings,
Should you be planning to be in or near Newark, NJ, on November 3, 2006, I
hope you will consider attending the 12th annual New Jersey Book Arts
Symposium, a three-quarter day of presentations and discussions on topics
of moment to students, scholars, artists, collectors, enthusiasts,
knowledge seekers and practitioners of the book arts.
The theme of this year's symposium, "Flaps, Folds, Figures, and Flash:
Books with Movable Parts" will be structures traditionally characterized
as pop-up and movable books. With the help of eight distinguished artists,
collectors and librarians, the Symposium will explore pop-up and movable
books from every conceivable perspective, but pay close attention to
various craft and artistic techniques, materials, paper engineering, book
collecting, and the evolving cultural context. This year's roster of
presenters includes:
Debra Weier
Maria Pisano
William Dane
Ellen Rubin
Chuck Miley
Ed Hutchins
Kyle Olmon
&
Judith K. Brodsky
"Flaps, Folds, Figures and Flash" will also include the customary "book
artists' jam," at which all attendees are invited to display their own
book art and book creations, and an exhibition combining traditional and
innovative pop up/movable books, which will be on view in the Dana Gallery
through January 7th. The exhibition curator, Amanda Thackray, a book
artist, printmaker and recent graduate of The Rutgers Center for
Innovative Print and Paper, will open the exhibition at the close of the
formal program. As in the past, Marcia Wilson will be the Symposium's
Artist-In-Residence.
We are especially pleased to announce that this year the Symposium will
have as its guest chair, Ann Montaro. For over a decade, Ann Montanaro has
been an inspired advocate for pop-up and movable books. As an
internationally respected bibliographer, editor, speaker, curator and
collector, she has moved comfortably among diverse communities, helping to
revitalize interest in these culturally idiomatic books. While her most
significant contributions have been in the field of book history, through
her acclaimed two volume bibliography, "Pop-up and Movable Books: A
Bibliography," and the Movable Book Society, a world-wide organization
that she founded in 1993, Montanaro has played an equally noteworthy role
in popularizing pop-ups and movables among an international community of
book artists, helping to transform what was once derogated as a novelty
format into a powerful site for personal expression and meaning making.
In addition to its newsletter, "Movable Stationery" [sic] -- which
Montanaro edits -- the Pop Up and Movable Book Society holds a biennial
conference, generally regarded as the most influential forum for
discussions on pop-up and movable books. People desiring more information
about the work of the Movable Book Society can view its website at

Because of the nature of this year's program, early registration for the
12th annual New Jersey Book Arts Symposium has been unusually high, and
those interested in attending who have not yet registered are encouraged
to do so swiftly. For registration, please contact Chris Ingram at 973-353
