I trim off the bound edge of the book and do a perfect binding using the neat machine that is sold for that purpose. For additional strength, I do a saw kerf binding on top of this (Someone has described this is a preivious post using a different name; saw indentations in the spine and fill them with glue and twine.)

yep, first thing i learned....how to fix crappy trade paperback spines with 'perfect' bindings.
Gimme a backing saw and a ball of twice and i'm happy.

I remember an anniversary edition of Joy of Cooking where EVERY copy i ever saw had a broken spine.
sheesh.

This new kid on the block wishes to learn two things:

1. How to rebind paperback books who have "perfect" (cut & glued) bindings.

2. How to strengthen expensive books that have cheap bindings

I have had three copies of the Oxford Dictionary of Christian names fall apart

and I have other books with "perfect" bindings that I would love to fix
before

they completely fall apart

My expensive books are so costly because they relate to fields of limited

general interest (e.g. medieval anthroponymy, historical Romance
linguistics,

erc.) and are printed in Europe or the British Isles not because they are
fine
leather volumes.

Sometime in the future, I would like to work with leather bookbinding;
however, that field is an interest-not a pressing need.

To my knowledge here are no local binderies: Atlanta is 450 miles north; Key West is 400 miles south

Thanks for any and all suggestions.
