There are a few openings left in the Frederic W. Goudy Workshop
at Scripps College in Claremont, California:
Visual Typography
Sam Winston with Ron King
January 24-25, 2009
9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Scripps College Press
Cost: $200
Sam’s artistic approach is language-based. This workshop will focus
on the idea of illustrating with type. We will investigate how we use
language which is married to visual interpretation. Sam and Ron will
show teaching samples explaining ways of editing texts to make a
visual statement about the message. Sam’s large book A Made-up/True
Story was presented in the Fall exhibit Performing the Book at the
Williamson Gallery and Ron's Anansi Company was also showcased.
SAM WINSTON
Through his explorations of language, Sam Winston creates sculpture,
drawings and books that question our understanding of words, both as
a carriers of messages and as information itself. He started writing
stories and selling artist books through London’s Institute of
Contemporary Arts and can now be found in special collections across
the world, including MoMA New York, Getty Research Institute, the
Tate Galleries London, and Victoria & Albert Museum. He has exhibited
internationally and worked on various commissions including COMME des
GARCONS Guerrilla Store (Hong Kong) and The New York Times. His work
is currently on show in the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
RON KING
Circle Press, formed by Ron King in 1967, is both part of a tradition
and a breaker of tradition. The Press has been highly productive for
over forty years and has had a profound effect, directly and
indirectly, on other artists working with books. The name Circle
Press was chosen by Ron to suggest his vision of a group of like-
minded persons working within a shared, supportive framework, a
circle which over the period of time has enlarged to include over 100
artists and poets. The press, which was originally in Guildford,
moved to London in 1988 and has always been managed in all aspects of
its activities by the artists themselves from production to sales and
distribution. In 2002, The Yale Center for British Art in New Haven,
Connecticut celebrated Ron King's 70th birthday with a further
extensive show of Circle Press work, which included a great selection
of archival material. Together with the archives, the Center has the
most comprehensive collection of Circle Press work in the world.
“Cooking the Books,” a full catalogue raisonné with four original
hand-made inserts in a limited edition of 1000, was published to
accompany the exhibition.
