We had an old press that was so rusted it was frozen shut, used as a lawn
ornament...  So, we soaked it in wd-40 for about two weeks (large platstic
tub, you can buy liquid WD-40 at Home Depot) which loosened up the screw and
then with wire brushes and a grinder we took the majority of gross and finer
rusted areas off, we then used a belt sander, to insure level and flat
surface (heavy grit) etc.  We used navy jelly as well but not to sure how
helpful it was.

Finally the metal was treated/primed with rust-oleum,(from wallmart) then
spray painted with a high gloss rust-oleum paint (black 'cause I wanted a
black on!)  

It took weeks to un-stick it and a LOT of work to clean it up.  I use the
press all the time, its great.  We did have a broken bolt that my husband
had to fix but if  yours is rust only, it will be a lot simpler.  Our
initial cost was 50 for the press and about that in 'stuff' but it's ours.

Hi all,

I have acquired an old book press from our local antique store (I'd
rather say "barn" :). It looks pretty much like this one:

It is in decent condition, but there's some rust on the sides and
unfortunately on the platen, where it is rather deep and makes the
surface uneven. I wish to paint it somehow so that I could use the
press. I don't care if it won't look historically accurate after
painting :)
Hence, I have some questions:

1. What's the best way to clean it before painting?
2. Which paint is good? I've read about rustoleum here on the list,
but I am not sure which rustoleum (tm) product to use.
