North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Preservation Librarian.  The Libraries
has just completed a Collection Analysis Project under the auspices of
ARL/OMS, a key element of which was the recommendation to establish a
preservation program.  This position offers an outstanding opportunity
for a creative librarian to shape the NCSU Libraries' preservation
program.  The Preservation Librarian will work in close relationship
with the Collection Management and Acquisitions Departments and in
consultation with the Libraries' service units to evaluate the diverse
preservation activities and needs of the Libraries.  The Preservation
Librarian will then recommend long-term organizational and reporting
structures and, in the context of relevant on-campus academic programs
in areas such as Archival Management and Pulp and Paper Sciences, guide
the planning and implementation of a cohesive program.

Responsibilities

    Under the guidance of the Associate Director for Technical Services
    and Collection Management, analyzes and evaluates existing
    preservation activities and needs; manages existing preservation
    unit (7 FTE regular and temporary staff); formulates program
    objectives, plans for implementation, and manages program with a
    designated budget; maintains high level of technical expertise to
    ensure ongoing preservation activities, conservation projects, and
    effective disaster response; recommends and implements emerging
    preservation technologies; evaluates products and work of
    preservation contractors and vendors; prepares grant proposals for
    preservation project funding.  Serves on library-wide committees,
    task forces and teams.  Is active professionally and contributes to
    developments in preservation of information resources.

Qualifications

    Required:  ALA-accredited MLS. Minimum of five years relevant
    professional library experience; broad knowledge of preservation and
    conservation, including technical, physical and bibliographic
    aspects, based on at least two years of focused work experience,
    equivalent course work or related training; demonstrated successful
    management and supervisory experience; familiarity with automated
    library systems and library binding practices; excellent oral,
    written and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated program
    planning and leadership skills. Preferred:  Familiarity with the
    care and handling of archives, photographs, film, and other non-book
    materials; experience with or awareness of use of digital technology
    in preservation; skills in pursuing funding opportunities and in
    writing grant proposals; experience with commercial and cooperative
    contracts. The University and the Libraries

Together with Duke University and the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, NCSU founded the Triangle Research Libraries Network
(TRLN), a cooperative effort of distinction among four major research
libraries with combined resources approaching 11 million volumes.

Salary and Benefits

    The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with
    experience, not less than $35,000 for this position.   Librarians at
    NCSU have academic status without tenure or rank.  Benefits include:
    26 days vacation; health insurance, and TIAA/CREF, state, or other
    retirement options.  Additional and optional dental, life,
    disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.
    Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The University of North
    Carolina is available.
