Position:  Assistant Head, Preservation Department and Head,
           Conservation Section; Assistant Librarian

Available:  Immediately

Environment:  The Indiana University Libraries collectively are one of
the leading academic research library systems in North America,
providing strong collections, quality service and instructional
programs, and leadership in the application of new information
technologies.  The university community includes approximately 96,000
students and 4,000 faculty on eight campuses.  The libraries on the
Bloomington campus house a collection of over five million cataloged
volumes and extensive other collections.  A university-wide NOTIS
integrated system is used, and retrospective conversion of older
collections is in progress.

The I.U. Libraries have three major components:  Libraries in
Bloomington, including the Main Library (Research and Undergraduate
Collections), the Lilly Library (rare books), 15 branch libraries, and
12 residence-hall libraries; libraries in Indianapolis, including the
University Libraries, Medicine, Dentistry, and Law Libraries; and
libraries at six other I.U. campuses across the state.  The I.U. Library
System will be significantly involved in the coming capital fund-raising
campaign.  The Bloomington libraries are part of a dynamic campus
community of approximately 36,000 students and 1,500 faculty. The campus
offers a wide range of intellectual and cultural opportunities including
performances at the world-renowned School of Music, and outstanding
collections in the I.M. Pei-designed Art Museum.

Staff in the Preservation Department prepare materials for commercial
library binding and for shelving, perform conservation treatments and
preservation reformatting, and assist with disaster salvage for the
Bloomington campus libraries.  The Department also provides training,
education and outreach, environmental monitoring, and disaster recovery
planning.

Responsibilities:  Assists head of Preservation Department with
development of policies and goals for the preservation and conservation
programs; establishes conservation priorities and treatment strategies
for the collections in consultation with the Preservation Department
Head and fund managers, with primary emphasis on the Libraries'
circulating collections; coordinates all Preservation Department
conservation units, including supervising 3.5 FTE appointed staff;
trains conservation technicians in treatment techniques; trains branch
staff in minor repairs, housing and cleaning techniques; treats
circulating and special collections materials; leads disaster planning
and recovery; and monitors library storage environments.  This position
works closely with library departments, units and staff; cooperates with
other conservation staff in the Libraries and on campus; and maintains
communications with conservators nationally.

Qualifications:  MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program;
certification in conservation of library and archival materials from an
ALA accredited graduate program or equivalent experience; three or more
years of experience in supervision of a conservation laboratory
dedicated to library materials; demonstrated knowledge of current
conservation and library binding techniques; strong analytical skills;
flexibility; ability to work effectively with staff at all levels and
with many different backgrounds; excellent written and oral
communication skills.  Preferred:  Two or more years of post-graduate
experience as a conservator for general collections in a research
library preservation or conservation program.

Salary:  Salary negotiable and competitive, dependent upon experience
and qualifications, with salary minimum of $26,919 (Assistant Librarian
salary floor).

Conditions and Benefits:  Librarians hold tenure-track appointments
within a system of ranks analogous to and modeled on those of the
teaching faculty, with excellence of job performance as the primary
criterion for promotion and tenure.  They participate in a system of
faculty governance that includes the Bloomington Faculty Council and the
University Faculty Council. Within the University they serve on
university committees and task forces.  They are eligible for sabbatical
and other research leaves.
