The Syracuse University Library is pleased to announce the two-
year appointment, effective July 1, 1995, of Peter David Verheyen to
the newly-created position of Conservation Librarian in the Library's
Preservation Department.  Peter's responsibilities will include rare
book conservation, staff training, regional outreach, and a variety
of other preservation-related activities.  While at Syracuse,
Peter will be earning his MSL from Syracuse's School of Information
Studies.

Peter comes to Syracuse from the Cornell University Library, where
he was Book Conservator there for nearly three years.  Prior to
Cornell, Peter Worked as Assistant Conservator at the Yale University
Library, and with William Minter, Bookbinding and Conservation in
Chicago.

Peter began his involvement in conservation while he was a work
study student at the Johns Hopkins University Library, and furthered
his conservation skills during a formal two-year apprenticeship in
hand bookbinding at the Kunstbuchbinderei Klein in Gelsenkirchen,
Germany (1986-1987). Following his apprenticeship, Peter studied with
Julia Puissant at the Professional School for Book Restoration in
Ascona, Switzerland in (1987), worked as an intern with Georg
Reinwald in the conservation lab of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum
in Nurembery, Germany, and with Frank Mowery at the Folger Shakespeare
Library as a Mellon Intern in Washington D.C. (1988).

Peter is a member of numerous national and international
organizations, and is particularly involved with the Guild of Book
Workers as Exhibitions Chair.  Peter has exhibited his own work widely
with the group, and also serves as for Production Editor of the
Guild's Newsletter.

Syracuse is extremely excited about Peter's appointment and
welcome him warmly aboard.
