Subject: CD-rom longevity
In reference to Rab Jackson's query for a colleague concerning the longevity of CD-ROM's, and concerning the longevity of digital media in general, I think the following article is worth reading: "Ensuring the Longevity of Digital Documents", by Jeff Rothenberg, in the January 1995 issue of _Scientific American_, pp. 42-47. **** Moderator's comments: This article was cited in Cons DistList Instance: 9:9 (and thanks to Luis Nadeau for catching the typo. It was obviously the 1995 issue, not the 1985 issue). But this is a good chance to mention that there are some responses to that article by Jim Wheeler and John W.C. Bogart, in Conservation OnLine. Via WWW you'll find them at http://palimpsest.stanford.edu (there's a link on the welcome page). We need your help. FAIC seeks to improve CoOL and the DistList, and increase their value to the conservation field and beyond. In an effort to do so, we have put together a short, voluntary survey of DistList subscribers and other users of the CoOL website and its various resources. Please help us develop these invaluable resources by taking a few minutes to complete the survey
