New York State Conservation/Preservation Grant Awards

New York State Library Announces Grants to Preserve Rare Library
Materials

New York State Librarian Joseph F. Shubert today announced 39 grants
to libraries and other organizations to preserve deteriorating
library research materials. The grants, totaling $500,000 are part
of a $1.7 million comprehensive, statewide program to preserve
endangered materials important to the State.

According to Barbara Lilley, Conservation/Preservation
Program Officer in the New York State Library Development Team
the 1995 awards include projects that will preserve a number of
collections of unique photographs, architectural drawings;
brittle newspapers and archives, and other activities. Examples
of grants awarded this year are:

The Adirondack Museum--Kamp Kill Kare Architectural Drawings
Conservation Project--$19,075 for the conservation treatment of
forty-nine architectural drawings of Kamp Kill Kare, an Adirondack
Great Camp, produced from 1916-22. The site was originally owned by
William West Durant. Later owners included Timothy Woodruff,
Theodore Roosevelt's lieutenant governor and Alfred G. Vanderbilt.
In 1915 when building of the present building was begun, the camp
was owned by Francis P. Garvan. The material includes drawings done
in ink, pencil, pastel and water color and are in poor condition.
The drawings were prepared by Charles C. Hiscoe of the architectural
firm of John Russell Pope, known for Beaux Arts designs such as the
national Gallery of Art in Washington, for formal presentation.

New York Transit Museum Archives--Preservation of Subway
Construction Photographs--$25,000 to rehouse 27,228 photographs and
negatives documenting the construction of the New York City subway
system, from 1904-1933. The collection covers the earliest parts of
the Interborough Rapid Transit System, the Brooklyn-Manhattan
Transit system, and the Independent subway system and present an
extraordinarily detailed record of the commercial life and existing
architecture above ground along every section of the subway lines.
These images capture a wealth of detail of street life, commerce,
transportation, fashion, and other topics of interest to historians
of New York City and urban and social historians in general.
Because these images were made with large-format cameras with
precision expected of surveying teams, one has no difficulty reading
shop signs, prices in shop windows, street signs, and horsedrawn
omnibus departure schedules.

Albany Institute of History and Art--Gerber Photographic
Preservation Project -$15,021 has been funded for a photo
conservator to survey the Morris Gerber Photograph Collection of
29,500 negatives and prints. This collection is the best surviving
photographic record of the social, economic and cultural life in
Albany from the 1860's through the 1970's. Business activity as
well as the changing physical fabric and street life in urban and
suburban Albany was documented by photographers Stephen Schreiber,
William Klein and the Knickerbocker News among others and brought
together as a collection by Morris Gerber. After training project
staff will then rehouse, survey their condition and segregate glass,
nitrate and acetate negatives from prints. A preservation plan for
the Gerber Collection will be part of the final report for this
project.

Southeastern New York Library Resources Council--Basic Conservation
Techniques for Southeastern Libraries--$12,525 to provide a course
on basic conservation techniques. Five three-hour sessions will be
held in two locations for thirty participants in the Mid-Hudson
Valley.

Applications Encouraged for 1996

Most of the funds in the program are granted to comprehensive
research libraries, but the law sets aside $500,000 for preserving
materials in the collections of other libraries, archives,
historical societies and similar agencies. According to Ms. Lilley,
the program provides modest financial support for projects to
preserve library research materials. She said there is strong
competition for the $500,000 and that the maximum grant in the
program is $25,000. In the past the program has helped libraries and
other repositories preserve unique books, maps, photographs,
architectural drawings and archives. While this is a competitive
grant program Ms. Lilley encourages institutions to seek funding
through this program.

Libraries, historical societies and other eligible organizations
applied for the funds in December 1994. Applications for the 1996
program will be due on December 1, 1995.

Discretionary Grant writing workshops will be offered in Albany on
September 11, Syracuse on September 18 and Bellport, L.I. on August
24. For information about the Conservation/Preservation Program, or
