Preserving unbound papers

From: Gregor Trinkaus-Randall <gtrinkaus>

On the 16th of August Jenni Boone asked about ways to preserve items
from their Special Collections. In the first place, since she
admits it herself, someone with very little preservation experience
should be *very* cautious about dealing with Special Collections
materials. In the second place she should definitely avoid
lamination. Were she to place them in folders and boxes, she should
make sure that they are alkaline and preferably buffered (unless
photographic). Jenni needs to obtain archival supply catalogs from
the likes of University Products, Gaylord, Metal Edge West, Light
Impressions, Conservation Resources International, etc. to make an
informed decision as well as consulting with a conservator or
preservation administrator in her area. May I suggest that she
contact AIC in Washington for a referral.
