The book "Looking After Antiques" by Anna Plowden and Frances
Halahan (Pan Books, London,1987) is one I recommend to
non-conservators, as it seems to offer safe and sensible advice on a
wide variety of materials, with clear instructions and diagrams.
Most importantly it clearly identifies the point where non
conservators should stop trying to do it themselves, and consult a
conservator.
