Job Description

The California State Library, through the Library Services and
Construction Act (LSCA), has funded two internships in preservation
for a California librarian, which is available now through September
1996.

The California Preservation Internships will be hosted by the
Conservation Department of the Library at the University of
California, Berkeley.  The internship is designed to accomplish
projects in support of the California Preservation Program, and to
prepare the intern to serve as a resource person in preservation for
the home region, based at his/her home institution.

Four major projects have been planned.  The first is to plan and
conduct workshops on disaster preparedness and response, and on
preservation needs assessment for library and archive collections in
under-served regions of the state.  The second is to promote
preservation of historical materials and help establish preservation
networks in California through public awareness activities, using
the California Preservation Program as a guide.  Third, create a
database of vendors for preservation supplies, and arrange for it to
be available online through the California State Library webserver.
Finally, the interns are expected to offer assistance to
institutions preparing grant proposals for the preservation of
materials significant to the history of California, particularly for
proposals to the California State Library LSCA program.

Qualifications:

  Required

    Early or mid-career professional working in a library in
    California

    Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational,
    and management skills

    Ability to learn quickly, and commitment to the field of
    preservation demonstrated through self-directed background
    reading and research

    Willing and able to spend some time in residence at UC Berkeley,
    schedule negotiable.  Full and part time contracts may be
    accommodated.

  Desirable

    Computer skills: Wordperfect for Windows, electronic mail,
    database program, spreadsheet program

    Experience with grant or budget preparation 5 - 10 years work
    experience in a library

Three professional references will be requested.

The home institution must be willing to hold the intern's position
open for return, and, for at least one year following the
internship, to contribute 10% of the intern's time to serve as a
regional preservation information resource person.  The intern's
salary will be reimbursed to the home institution, and basic
expenses associated with the internship will be paid with funds
provided by LSCA.
