Microfilming manuscript collections

This query is for institutions that have microfilmed literary
manuscripts or personal papers collections within the last five
years.

The Division of Special Collections at the University of Maryland at
College Park Libraries is beginning to reprocess completely the
papers of author Katherine Anne Porter for microfilming. Her
extensive personal papers reflect her interests in writing, travel,
politics and current events and also document events in her private
life. The portions of the Porter collection to be filmed include
correspondence, notes and drafts for her works, publications, legal
documents, and financial records.

I'm interested to hear about what sorts of problems other
institutions have confronted. We're concerned about security issues
while the papers are out for filming: aside from making an
item-level inventory (not a possibility) and selecting a reputable
microfilming firm, how do you ensure that none of these very
valuable materials have disappeared? We are using the RLG Archives
Microfilming Manual, but are interested to hear other cautions,
hints, etc.
