Colonial Williamsburg is seeking an Assistant Conservator of Metals
to start on February 1, 1996.  This is a regular, full time exempt
position which is funded through December 31, 1997.  The salary
range for an Assistant Conservator is $22,650 - $30,200  plus a
competitive benefits package.

This position is funded for the treatment of silver destined for
various exhibition settings including the DeWitt Wallace Decorative
Arts Gallery, the new Silver Study Gallery, and the Colonial
Williamsburg Historic Area.  This is a full-time benchwork position
which will involve the use of mass treatment methodologies to
survey, examine, propose and to carry out conservation treatments.

Minimum requirements for this position include:

    Specific knowledge and demonstrated experience in conservation
    treatment of historic metal objects for exhibition.

    General knowledge of the principles and techniques of the
    science and art of conservation.

    Ability to examine, document, survey, propose treatment options,
    and conduct treatments of metal objects of the 16th - 19th
    century.

    Excellent oral and written communication skills.

All of the above generally gained through Bachelor's degree in art,
art history, museum studies, or related field or the equivalent
technical education in an apprenticeship under a recognized metals
or objects conservator.

This position also requires 2 years working experience in metals or
objects conservation under a qualified conservator or comparable
experience.
