The diverse specimens which make up natural history collections hold
a wealth of information for researchers, curators, and educators
concerned with environmental, scientific, and social issues. The
integrity and value of these specimens is compromised and
diminished, however, if they are not effectively cared for in the
museum setting. This course focuses on the preservation principles
and methods that provide a foundation for long term care,
maintenance, research, exhibition, and educational uses of both
organic and inorganic specimens. Topics include:

    *   collections development
    *   ethical obligations and concerns
    *   conservation standards and objectives
    * traditional and new collection and preparation methods
    * specimen interactions with preservation methods and
        environments
    *   storage considerations

Accommodation: Bed & breakfast accommodation is available on-campus
at a rate of $60 per night - call (604) 721-8396
