Conference on conservation of archaeological leather

From: Nicholas Burnett <aaa268>
Date: Tuesday, January 27, 1998
The Archaeological Leather Group (ALG) in association with the
Department of Conservation of the British Museum will be hosting a
one-day conference on the subject of 'Current Treatments in the
Conservation of Waterlogged and Desiccated Archaeological Leather'
on Monday 23 March 1998.

The subject is a broad one within a specialised field. The
intention is to explore the problems of treating leather from dry
sites as well as that from wet and waterlogged (the latter has of
course been more fully researched). The latest treatments and ideas
centering on the conservation of leather will be aired, and there
will be time for discussion. We hope also to consider the problems
and limitations of the conservator encountering leather on
excavation; how to save an often delicate material in difficult
conditions. There will be a short Gallery Tour to look at some of
the extraordinary leather artefacts in the British Museum's
collections such as the Roman crocodile armour, and Roman shoes in
the new Prehistoric and Romano-British Gallery.

Speakers are from Britain and continental Europe, including France,
Switzerland and Norway.

Costs are low: 10 pounds for ALG members, 12 pounds concessions and
15 pounds non-members.

The Archaeological Leather Group exists to promote the study of
leather and leather objects from archaeological contexts by
scientists, conservators, artifact specialists, leather workers and
others interested in the material. It is a voluntary organisation
which aims to help illuminate the subject from a variety of angles.
