Meeting Announcement / Call For Papers
13th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural
History Collections
"Collections on the Move: Strategies for the New Millennium"
25-30 May 1998
University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

The University of Alberta, through the Department of Museums and
Collections Services is pleased to announce that it will be hosting
the 13th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Preservation of
Natural History Collections (SPNHC), 25-30 May 1998. SPNHC is a
multi-disciplinary organization comprised of individuals who are
interested in the development and preservation of natural history
collections.

As the hosts, the University of Alberta offers a network of natural
history museums and collections, and expertise in a range of subject
areas. The collections reflect the natural and human history of
Western Canada, and a diversity of other subject areas. These
collections also correspond to areas of established and emerging
research excellence where the University is known as a world leader.
Dr. Owen Beattie, from the University's Department of Anthropology
will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Beattie is internationally known
as the leader of the research team investigating Sir John Franklin's
ill-fated expedition that went missing in 1845 while searching for
the Northwest Passage.

During the conference there will be opportunities to listen to
technical presentations, learn about innovative initiatives at other
institutions during the poster sessions, interact in panel
discussions and join special interest group meetings. This year's
post-conference workshop will be an interactive opportunity to learn
about planning and implementing a collections move.
Behind-the-scenes tours have been arranged to the University of
Alberta's many natural history collections, as well as to the
Devonian Botanic Garden, The Provincial Museum of Alberta and the
Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology.

Registration packages have been mailed to SPNHC members. If you are
not a member of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History
Collections, but would like more information on registration or how
to submit a paper or poster abstract, contact
