Tortoise shell

From: Louise Bacon <bacon>

The conservation dept at the Horniman Museum are now working on a
wide range of objects in preparation for re-display of the
ethnography collections. We would welcome information or references
for treatment of tortoise shell or turtle shell. One object is a
mask from the Torres Straits, where the shell is very thick and has
a leathery appearance. Does anyone have any recommendations for
cleaning methods and adhesives to use on this material? Also has any
analytical work been done on similar objects?
