Subject: Tortoise shell
The conservation dept at the Horniman Museum are now working on a wide range of objects in preparation for re-display of the ethnography collections. We would welcome information or references for treatment of tortoise shell or turtle shell. One object is a mask from the Torres Straits, where the shell is very thick and has a leathery appearance. Does anyone have any recommendations for cleaning methods and adhesives to use on this material? Also has any analytical work been done on similar objects? We need your help. FAIC seeks to improve CoOL and the DistList, and increase their value to the conservation field and beyond. In an effort to do so, we have put together a short, voluntary survey of DistList subscribers and other users of the CoOL website and its various resources. Please help us develop these invaluable resources by taking a few minutes to complete the survey
