If workers outside the US are also invited to contribute to the
subject of Raman spectroscopy, I would just like to share that there
is excellent research going on in Europe and particularly in the UK.
There are for example several recent publications by Robin J.H.
Clark (University College London) who has extensively worked on
pigment identification by Raman microscopy, as well as works by
H.G.M. Edwards (University of Bradford, UK) on Raman spectroscopic
studies of ancient resins. This is to mention only a few.

I am currently also involved in a research project on
non-destructive pigment/media identification by Raman-microscopy (at
the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil) and in that respect I would be
very interested to participate in, as well as contribute to some
kind of information/experience exchange. As Raman microscopy can be
applied in a non-destructive way and has several superior qualities
to other techniques commonly used to analyze artists materials, it
should certainly receive more attention in the field of conservation
science.

Maybe, this is a good opportunity to initiate the formation of an
open discussion group with researchers interested in exchanging
information. I would be glad to help coordinate such an effort which
can probably be accomplished via e-mail at the beginning. Whoever is
interested, please get in touch.
