Call For Papers
Colour Media: The Art and Science of Conserving Colour on Paper
The Art Institute of Chicago, October 1999

Colour on paper has always presented significant treatment
challenges and research opportunities for paper conservators and
conservation scientists. A three-day conference is planned to
address an array of coloured media including chalk, pastel,
watercolour, gouache, tempera and coloured ink applied to paper.
Papers are invited on the history and development of these
materials, their use by various artists, their physical properties,
criteria for their identification, framing and presentation, storage
and transport of such materials, as well as conservation case
studies and the ethical issues that surround them. Since the topic
of colour is also of interest to those in related disciplines,
submission of papers is sought from art historians, curators and
practising artists as well as individuals from within the field of
conservation. Postprints with colour illustrations are planned.

The conference will take place at The Art Institute of Chicago in
October 1999. The Institute has significant holdings of old master
prints and drawings as well as important works of art on paper by
nineteenth century and modern masters. Each day delegates will be
invited to the Glore Print Study Room in the Department of Prints
and Drawings to view and examine works of art on paper that will
directly relate to that day's talks. Different works will be
elected each day to complement the talks presented. During
registration and the opening reception delegates will have the
opportunity to view Ellsworth Kelly: Early Drawings, the major
exhibition planned for the fall of 1999. Additional social
programmes will include and optional conference dinner, visits to
conservation studios and prepaid architectural and river boat tours.

Abstracts, with a provisional title, of up to 1,000 words are
invited. Three copies should be sent to
