Painting Conservation Department Technician
National Gallery of Art

The technician's duties include operating x-ray and infrared
reflectography equipment, as well as digital image processing. The
technician is responsible for monitoring, ordering and preparation
of supplies, as well as organization, maintenance and updating of
technical files and research related to works of art treated or
examined by staff conservators. The work also involves filing,
typing, photocopying and computer database management.

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree with a background in art
history, studio art and/or science (especially chemistry or
physics), be familiar with desktop computers (desktop publishing,
graphics, database, and word processing applications) and possess
good analytical and research abilities. The technician works
independently in support of the conservators.

Compensation is based on the background and experience of the
candidates. The starting salary is expected to be between $20-25,000
per year. This is a federally-funded position. The Museum's Personnel
Office will be organizing the job search, and there will be a
strictly-kept period, generally 3 or 4 weeks, during which
applications must be received (including all letters of
recommendation). It is expected that this application period will be
during June 1998, and interviews will be conducted towards the end
of the summer. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United
States.
