Publication on mountmaking

From: Carole Dignard <carole_dignard>
Date: Thursday, August 6, 1998
"Mountmaking for Museum Objects" is a new handbook published by
Canadian Conservation Institute, produced jointly with the Centre de
conservation du Quebec. Written by R.L. Barclay, Andre Bergeron and
Carole Dignard, with illustrations by Carl Schlichting, this 57 page
ring-bound paperback book provides advice for conservators,
designers, display technicians and others who require information on
the mounting of museum objects for display.

Topics covered include:

    * reasons why mountmaking is important in a museum context
    * what to consider when starting a mount
    * chemical composition and physical properties of recommended
safe materials (divided into: base materials; padding and
        finishing materials; adhesives,
    *   fasteners and miscellaneous materials)
    * tips on choice of materials
    * methods of measuring artifacts to tailor mounts to objects

Sixteen examples of custom-made mounts for various museum objects
are fully described with line drawings and photographs, including a
list of tools required and an outline of the method of construction.
The intention is to show a variety of challenges that safe mounting
can present and to introduce a range of potentially useful materials
and techniques. The reader is encouraged to use these examples as a
jumping-off point for mount design rather than copy them verbatim. A
bibliography and a list of tools recommended for museum mountmaking
are also included.

Available at $42 CAN plus handling/shipping costs (Canada $6; US
