Call for papers--reversibility

Reversibility--Does It Exist?

This British Museum Conference will take place 8-10 September 1999
and the booking forms and programme will be available in the new
year. Three papers have, however, been withdrawn recently and we are
seeking replacements as the aim of the conference is to have papers
relating to as many types of material as possible which come under
the heading of 'portable heritage'. We are thus seeking papers on
'reversibility' as applied to Oriental paintings, especially
scrolls, oriental lacquer, and easel paintings or drawings in modern
media. Other topics which are not covered, but which would be
equally welcome are mosaics which have been removed from their
original site, icons, archaeological metalwork and archives.

We are looking for papers on the subject of reversibility as applied
to cleaning, stabilization, consolidation, assembly, and
restoration. Changes to the physical or chemical properties of
objects as a result of treatment are also relevant. Papers should
explore themes and question current philosophy or accepted dogma and
should not shrink from controversy where relevant.

If you have a possible contribution, please e-mail or fax Sara
Carroll as soon as possible. Full texts with all illustrations will
be required by the end of January 1999, but an extension to the end
of February may be negotiable. Preprints will be available at the
conference so we ask that authors do not read the submitted paper
but rather discuss their contribution and illustrate it with more
slides than can be included in the printed version.
