The National Trust

The National Trust is Europe's leading conservation charity, and its
collections, housed in some two hundred properties open to the
public, are of outstanding importance.  Further information about

advice and professional expertise in preventive and remedial
conservation of collections and historic interiors.

We currently have the following vacancies:

Conservators

    Bishopstrow near Warminster, Wiltshire
    Full-time fixed term contract to March 31, 2005 to cover
    secondment

    Lamberhurst, Kent
    Part-time, Wednesday to Friday

    Salary: UKP22,390-UKP25,780pa depending upon skills and
    experience, pro-rata if part-time

    The successful candidates will join a team of Conservators
    working in the National Trust's new west and south territories.
    We aim to enable sustainable access to our unique historic
    buildings and collections. The work involves working with other
    experts and staff based in many properties with varied
    collections and challenges.  You would train staff in
    housekeeping and overseeing technical standards in preventive
    conservation and care of collections, maintaining conservation
    records, as well as providing advice on remedial conservation
    priorities and the allocation of resources.

    Applicants must have a good first degree and/or a recognised
    conservation qualification. PACR is highly desirable. You will
    have at least three years' practical experience of working as a
    Conservator. Communication, team working, organisational,
    planning and IT skills are important as well as the ability to
    promote the interests of conservation and to train, motivate and
    develop staff at all levels. You must be prepared to work on
    site and a clean driving licence is also required.

Assistant Conservator
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Three year fixed term contract
Salary: UKP16,370 pa

    This post is an example of the Trust's commitment to learning
    and will provide training and development in all aspects of the
    Trust's conservation of collections and historic interiors.
    There will be exciting opportunities to increase your knowledge
    and experience of preventive conservation in historic buildings
    by assisting the Territory Conservator, in whose office you will
    be based, and working with the team of Conservators based in the
    Territory.

    Applicants must have a good first degree and a recognised
    conservation qualification. This could be your first job after
    training but some experience of working in the conservation
    field is desirable. You must be prepared to work on site and a
    clean driving licence is also required.

Textile Conservation Intern
Oulton near Blickling, Norwich
Two year fixed term contract
UKP14,550 pa on appointment rising to UKP16,370 pa

    The National Trust's textile collections are of outstanding
    national importance. We have recently converted the  Malthouse
    Barn, Oulton on the Blickling estate to become our Textile
    Conservation Studio.  The Studio is run as an enterprise,
    enabling the professionally trained staff to also offer
    conservation services to other independent and world renowned
    institutions.

    Due to the generous bequest of Mrs Kenneth Levy, The National
    Trust is pleased to be able to offer an internship of two years
    duration to explore the uniquely challenging and varied work of
    conserving historic textiles. Our intern assists experienced
    Textile Conservators with all aspects of textile conservation
    including tapestries, analysis of age old samples and textile
    dyeing, and will follow a work programme designed to offer new
    skills and broaden those already acquired.

    Applications are sought from students who are just completing
    their training in textile conservation or related studies, or
    from Conservators who have completed their training in the last
    three years. Applicants require a full driving licence and it
    would be an advantage to have your own transport.  The
    successful applicant will take up the internship in September
