Graduate program in conservation science

The Malta Centre for Restoration is launching a Master of Science in
Conservation Science October, 2003.

This 2-year course is a taught Masters Degree that aims to provide,
primarily to graduates from the natural sciences, the backbone of
Conservation Science within the broad field of chemistry, biology,
physics and geology applied to conservation. This Masters degree is
considered to be the stepping stone for natural scientists to
eventually specialise at PhD level in any of the multiple areas of
expertise in Conservation Science that range from specialists in
paintings to environmental scientists to biomineralisation experts.

The course consists of a taught component in the first year and the
initial part of the second year and is followed by laboratory
placements in a chosen area of study that can, depending on the
availability of resources, be:

    metals
    glass, faience and ceramics
    architectural surfaces
    wall paintings and mosaics
    stone
    paintings on canvas, wood and polychrome sculpture
    textiles
    books, paper and manuscripts
    wood
    environmental studies

Entrance Requirements: The Course shall be open to applicants in
possession of:

  (a) the degree of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science
  (Honours) with at least Second Class of the University of Malta
  with a natural science as one of the areas of study; or

  (b) a Second Class or equivalent degree acceptable to the Board of
  Studies which would ensure that applicants can follow the course
  successfully.

  All students must satisfy the Board of Studies, normally through
  an interview, that they have the necessary aptitude to join the
  course.
