Collections Care Manager
Creative Planet

The Creative Planet is a new National Museum of Science and
Industry initiative at Wroughton, near Swindon, England. The
Carbon Exchange (Science Museum at Creative Planet) is one of
the five knowledge farms that are to be developed that will
combine conservation and musicological excellence with
    spectacular visitor attractions.

The primary job purpose for this post will be to manage all
aspects of collection care (including conservation,
documentation, security, display and storage), to co-ordinate
object acquisitions, disposals and loans, and contribute to the
overall management of the Carbon Exchange.

The post holder will be responsible for all aspects of
collection care including preventive conservation and hazards
management, as well as managing and motivating staff, with a
    revenue budget of UKP35k.

Applicants will need experience of collections management and
object storage, including technical competence and expertise in
conservation. At least some of this experience should have
included responsibility for the effective planning and
management of operational services and resources, and preferably
volunteers. Probably with a relevant management/professional
qualification, applicants must be able to demonstrate a
commitment to sustainable development, together with an
analytical approach to decision making, and the ability to
control and complete projects. Prior exposure to safety and
security issues gained in a similar environment is also
essential, and knowledge of current developments in museums
    would be an advantage.

To be successful in this post, the applicant will need to be
highly motivated, with excellent leadership and relationship
building skills. In addition, resource and services management,
project control and delivery expertise will be essential. The
post holder must also be able to demonstrate an appropriate
level of computer proficiency, ideally including collection
databases, together with effective and well developed
    communication, presentation and negotiating skills.

staff, 2 Conservators and 6 Conservation Assistants, together
