SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to
announce our Winter 2003 Preservation Workshops (Please excuse
cross-posting):

Basic Collections Care
Richland County Public Library, Columbia, SC
Thursday, February 12, 2004
9am-4pm

Public library and school media center circulating collections
are subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Despite staff members'
good intentions, some materials and procedures used to repair
damaged items can shorten the useful life of the book, make it
hard to open, and cause more problems later.

This hands-on, one-day workshop will teach staff how to minimize
damage to collections by learning proper use, handling and
storage of collections. Also covered are simple, economical
repairs on materials for public libraries. The session
emphasizes techniques that are most often needed in public
libraries, do not require expensive equipment and supplies, and
can be performed successfully by clerical or student support
staff after a short training period.

The workshop will *not* cover techniques for the repair of
research collections or materials that are special, rare, or
    archival.

Cost is $125 SOLINET members ($115 early bird, $150 late
    registration), $165 Non-members ($155 early bird, $190 late
registration). Any institution in South Carolina qualifies for
    the member rate.

Care and Cataloging of Map Collections
Georgia Archives, Morrow, Georgia
Monday, February 23, 2004
9am-4pm.

Institutions caring for large map collections find that these
collections pose special problems. Many are oversized or rolled
and hard to store; others are unique and require special
    cataloging.

This one-day workshop covers basic care and cataloging issues of
map collections. The first half is devoted to a discussion of
the characteristics of the materials; a review of factors that
cause the deterioration of materials: environment, chemical, and
physical deterioration; an outline of storage, handling and
other preservation issues; and an overview of developing use
policies. The second half gives a basic introduction to the
format of maps and map cataloging principles, including the
major differences between book and map cataloging in the areas
of main entry, chief source of information, physical
description, and notes. MARC tagging, scale, projection and
coordinates, and subject classification will be discussed, as
well as resources for map cataloging and tips on searching for
    copy.

The workshop is designed for staff of libraries, archives or
other cultural institutions as a basic introduction to
preservation issues and basic cataloging procedures for map
    collections.

Cost is $115 SOLINET members ($105 early bird, $140 late
    registration), $155 Non-members ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration). Any institution in Georgia qualifies for the
    member rate.

Introduction to Preservation
Hampton University, Hampton, VA
Tuesday, March 23, 2004
9am-4pm

Preservation has a role in all types of libraries as a way of
protecting your investment in your collection. In these days of
ever-dwindling dollars and ever-expanding needs, the importance
of preserving a library's resources has never been more crucial.
The life expectancy of a library's collection can be extended
substantially, and inexpensively, by applying basic,
common-sense preservation principles to current, ongoing
    activities.

This session will outline the features of a wellness program,
demonstrating how all library staff have a role to play in
preserving the collection. It emphasizes preventive measures and
includes information on the elements of a comprehensive
preservation program, the nature of library materials, and the
mechanisms of deterioration. Discussions will also cover proper
care and handling practices, stack maintenance, staff and user
    education, and library binding.

Cost is $115 SOLINET members ($105 early bird, $140 late
    registration), $155 Non-members ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration). Any institution within Virginia qualifies for the
    member rate.
