IPH Congress 2008: Call for Papers

The 29th IPH Congress of International Association of Paper
Historians (IPH) will take place in Stockholm, Sweden on May 27-30,
2008, hosted by the Nordic Paper Historians, NPH.  The event will be
organized in conjunction with the 100 years anniversary of SPCI, the
Swedish Association of Paper and Pulp Engineers.

The overall theme of the Congress will be The Birth of an Industry
from Forest to Paper during the 19th Century and it will concentrate
on describing the huge structural changes that took place during
this period when the papermaking changed from a handicraft type of
activity to a continuously operating process industry.

Session 1. Introductory Session

In this session invited speakers will give presentations of a
general nature discussing the overall theme. These will include:

    The revolution of paper making; from handicraft to industry

    The development of a new raw material resource for papermaking;
    the utilization and management of Nordic forest resources during
    the 19th century

    The paper industry development; its economical and societal
    implications

    The evolution of paper products

    The parallel development of the rag fiber based industry

    The paper industry today and its relations to the 19th century
    development

Session 2. Historical aspects of the development of paper grades and
    qualities

This session could include topics such as

    The requirements over the years on paper permanence and
    durability

    The development of requirements on paper strength, printability
    etc

    The mutual inspiration and influence between Japanese and
    Western paper production at the end of the 19th century.

    The development of techniques for measuring and quantifying
    paper properties

    The influence of the wood fibre raw material base on the
    development of paper quality

    The importance of storing for the archival stability of paper
    (preventive conservation)

    What can be learned for the future concerning the development of
    paper paper grades and qualities?

Session 3. The economical development of the paper industry during
    the 19th century and in the future

This session could include topics such as

    The technology as a driving force for industrial development

    The relation between the industrial and economical development

    The influence and development of paper trade, customs tariffs
    etc

    The relation between the development of society and growth of
    the paper industry

    The influence of the paper industry on local communities The
    topics mentioned above are given as indicative examples only;
    also other topics fitting the main theme of the Congress will be
    considered.

Anyone wishing to present a paper during sessions 2 or 3 is invited
to send a short abstract, preferably electronically as a Word
document, not later than April 30, 2007 to the chairman of the
program committee with the address

The abstract should provide the

             Title of the presentation
             Name, address and e-mail of the author(s)
             Max 300 words summary of the content

The proposers will be informed by September 30, 2007 about the
acceptance of their proposal and with guidelines for the authors.
The full text of the presentations is required by March 31, 2008
together with a possible Power Point presentation.

The length of the oral presentations at the Congress will be c. 20
minutes. The congress language is English; no translation will be
provided.
