Do there exist common points between the varnish of lutes or
violins, the coatings of a harpsichord and the painting of their
time? Beyond just the requirements of protecting the object, the
aesthetic will of the "makers of instruments" seems manifest in
Europe since the Renaissance. What [connections] can one highlight
between the painter and the [instrument maker]? Does the search for
comparable aesthetic effects lead to the use of techniques or
similar materials in two arts? What are the chemical compounds, the
workshop [formulae] that can be highlighted? What are the
consequences of these similarities for the conservation or the
restoration of works?
