The National Gallery, which houses one of the finest collections of
Western European paintings in the world, maintains a well-equipped
Scientific Department with an international reputation. The
department is devoted to the study and care of the Collection and to
the analysis and technical documentation of paintings, and works
closely with the Gallery's conservators and curators.

The Organic Analyst will carry out analytical research on the
Collection. Particular emphasis will be on the examination and
identification of the organic components associated with easel
paintings and their ageing and deterioration in support of
conservation work and other technical research.

We are looking for a well-qualified chemist, ideally having
post-graduate or post-doctoral experience in the analysis of organic
natural products, primarily lipids and possibly proteins and/or
terpenoids. Knowledge of, or experience in, chromatography and/or

or optical microscopy would be an advantage. You will also be able
to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide
range of individuals who may have varying levels of understanding of
the field.

The appointment will be made as an Assistant Organic Analyst or
