Dr. Bronwyn Ormsby, Conservation Scientist at Tate, will introduce
the Tate AXA Art Modern Paints Project (TAAMPP), which commenced in
April 2006 and forms the second phase of a research project
evaluating the effects of surface cleaning acrylic emulsion paint
films at Tate. The project, funded by AXA Art, forms part of the
Modern Paints collaboration between Tate, the Getty Conservation
Institute and several other partners.

The TAAMPP is building on the foundations of a three-year project
funded by the Leverhulme Trust, which culminated in a presentation
at Modern Paints Uncovered (Tate Modern, May 2006). The TAAMPP has
several aims including: an ongoing evaluation of the properties of
acrylic emulsion paints; an evaluation of the cleaning efficacy of
currently used systems; a pilot study into dirt deposition on
acrylic paints; and a pilot study into varnishing acrylic emulsion
paints. In addition, the effects of the surface cleaning treatment
of five acrylic emulsion paintings (case studies) in the Tate
collection will be evaluated, in partnership with Patricia Smithen,
Head of Paintings Conservation at Tate.
