William Etty, a Yorkshire born painter (1787-1849), gained a
reputation during his lifetime as a painter of controversial subject
matter and for his experimental painting technique. Throughout his
life he explored the nude figure in art and experimented with oil
paint mixtures. He was nicknamed 'Il Diablo' for his rapid
application technique.

This talk explores Etty's painting materials and techniques, and
discusses how they can pose an issue for the condition and
conservation of his paintings.

Louise Hackett is a paintings conservator at Manchester City
Galleries, in a post funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
