"Concrete and Cast Stone in the 21st Century: Design, Preservation,
and Care of Contemporary and Historic Architecture"
Cambridge, MA
March 29-30, 2008

This intensive two-day conference sponsored by Technology and
Conservation, the MIT Department of Architecture's Building
Technology Program, and the Boston Society of Architects/AIA's
Historic Resources Committee will be held on the MIT campus in
Cambridge, MA, on March 29-30, 2008.

This conference will provide valuable, practical information for:

    architectural conservators
    object conservators
    architects
    engineers
    building restoration specialists
    construction specifiers
    real estate developers
    construction managers and supervisors
    campus planners
    contractors
    facilities and operations managers
    government officials responsible for the care, rehab, and/or
    continued viability of buildings and public art *  manufacturers
    and suppliers of components and systems for the preservation,
    restoration, repair, and/or maintenance of concrete and/or cast
    stone.

Among the topics to be discussed are:

    The basic material properties of concrete and cast stone

    How these material characteristics and interactions need to be
    considered in specifying concrete and cast stone for buildings,
    monuments, architectural ornamentation, and outdoor sculpture
    evaluation and inspection techniques

    New developments in manufacturing and fabrication operations and
    in construction techniques current design innovations

    Practical, cost-effective strategies for
    repairing/preserving/restoring structures viable approaches to
    preservation/maintenance planning and to facilities management
    case histories of contemporary and traditional structures
