Open letter
For the immediate reopening of the
National History Museum of Buenos Aires, Argentina

On June 30 2007 an historic watch that belonged to Manuel Belgrano,
was stolen from the Museum. The Museum then was ordered closed by
Judge Octavio Araoz de Lamadrid. So far there had been no results on
the investigation and the judge insists on keeping the Museum closed
to the general public as well as to the staff.

As workers and students of museum studies, conservation and culture
in general we consider that:

    * In these conditions the collections are unguarded,
vulnerable to the deterioration agents and it is not
        possible to guarantee its preservation

    * Since the Museum is located in an historical building, it
requires constant maintenance that it has not been taking
        place

    * The right of the staff of entering their place of work and
developing their tasks is being violated

    * The right of the public of accessing their cultural heritage
        is being violated

It is for all of this that the ones that are signing below demand
the immediate reopening of the Historic National Museum of Buenos
Aires, and the access to its wealthy cultural heritage for its
workers and the public.
