The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation
of Historic and Artistic Works
presents an FAIC Online course:

Digital Photography 101 for Conservation

FAIC is pleased to offer an online course to meet the needs of
conservators who want to learn how digital photography can be used
in their profession. "Digital Photography 101 for Conservation"
provides readings, case studies, presentations, and exercises to get
you thinking and planning. You will learn the basic principles and
terminology used in digital photography and processing. Online
discussion forums allow you to draw on the combined experience of
other participants and the course facilitator. Best of all,
"Digital Photography" comes to you. All you need is a computer with
Internet access and you are ready to learn.

"Digital Photography 101 for Conservation" is a four-week course.
Instruction will begin on Thursday, February 14 and continue, with
new activities, recorded presentations, and discussions each week,
through March 13. The course site will remain available for
reference and downloads for two weeks after the course ends. The
instructor, Yosi R-Pozeilov, will guide discussions and offer tips
and resources beyond what you find on the course site. You may work
on the course at any time within each week.

What the course will cover:

The components of a digital image

How conservators are using digital photography, and some of the
    ethical issues involved

    Processing tips and guidelines

    How digital image sensors work

    Storing and archiving digital images

Techniques for photographing two- and three-dimensional subjects

Time Requirements: Expect to spend at least six hours per week on
the course--roughly the equivalent of attending a full-day workshop
each week. You will use this time to complete exercises, and to
read and respond to the work of others in the course. You choose
when, according to your own schedule--at noon during your lunch
break, in the evening with a cup of coffee by your side, or at six
in the morning in your favorite jammies. (Although the timing of
your participation is flexible, we have found that participants have
difficulty keeping up with the course during extended trips.)

Registration: The fee for this course is $200 for AIC members, $300
for non-members. To register, complete and return the registration
form, which is available at
<URL:http://aic.stanford.edu/education/workshops/> or from the AIC
office.

The registration deadline is February 12, 2008. Participants will
be accepted in order of receipt of paid registration. Enrollment is
limited, so early registration is advised.

About the Facilitator:

Yosi R-Pozeilov's photographic experience is extensive, having
worked in conservation/preservation departments in museums and
libraries. He is skilled in digital and analog photography and
current with digital equipment and techniques. He is actively
augmenting the digital imaging capabilities at the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art's Conservation photo studio, integrating a
digital workflow to a traditional studio, something many
conservators are faced with. His face-to-face workshops on
digital photography for AIC, SERCA, VCA, and other organizations
have been extremely popular and well received.

This course was created with funding from the Getty Foundation. It
is presented with funding from the FAIC Endowment for Professional
Development, which is supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
and by gifts from members and friends of the American Institute for
Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.
