Clues to the Cloister: Hands-On Investigative Workshop
Italy
April 20 - May 3, 2008

Travel to the Monastery of San Giovanni Battista in Serravalle,
northern Italy to help find clues that will lead to the preservation
of its 15th century cloister. Learn the skills involved in the
conservation of damaged wall paintings and deteriorated masonry from
leading Italian conservators. Heritage Conservation Network is
offering this hands-on workshop, to be held from April 20 - May 3,
2008, as part of its continuing efforts to provide technical
assistance to preservation projects while bringing students,
professionals, and interested travelers together to learn
specialized skills as well as experience the local culture.

Workshop participants will be helping to restore the cloister of a
church that dates to 1367. The focus will be on examination and
documentation of interior stone columns and paintings that decorate
the upper walls. Week 1 will provide details about current
conditions and existing problems, along with a one-day workshop on
fresco painting led by Prof. Alma Ortolan and a one-day practicum on
Bio-deterioration of Monumental Rock led by Dr. Piero Tiano of the
Italian National Research Council. Week 2 will include a two-day
workshop on tools for consolidation of wall paintings led by Prof.
Luigi Dei of the University of Florence. Participants may register
for one or both weeks, and the cost is US$2200 per person per week,
excluding transportation to the site, with the fee covering lodging,
breakfast and lunch, fieldtrips, instruction and insurance.

The workshop includes two field trips--a guided day trip to Treviso
to tour the 14th century frescoes of Tomaso da Modera and to enjoy
local sites and shopping; and a group trip to Venice where
participants may explore this amazing city on their own. There will
also be walking tours of the local area. The workshop is limited to
eight participants, so early registration is encouraged; the
deadline for registration is April 4, 2008. Complete workshop
details and registration information can be found at
