Compensation for loss in textile conservation has been growing over
the last 20 years. More and more curators and collectors are
requesting repairs that lean toward restoration (and some that are
fairly invisible) rather than more conservative conservation.
Textile conservators have responded with solutions--some traditional
and some innovative, some integrated into the textile artifact, and
some passive compensation. This area of textile conservation is
interesting in terms of philosophy and ethics, as well as technique.

Kathy Francis presently works as a freelance textile conservator in
Summit, NJ. Before starting her private business in 2004, she worked
for the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston where she was
Conservator of Textiles from 1995-2002. Before that, from
1988-1994, she served as Chief Conservator of the Textile
Conservation Center at the Museum of American Textile History in
Lowell, MA. Ms. Francis is a Professional Associate of The American
Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC). Her
