Study of Dust in the Old Library (SOLD)
Trinity College Dublin

A partially funded PhD studentship, is offered by Trinity College
Dublin, Ireland, for the Study of Dust in the Old Library. The PhD
is a multidisciplinary project and will be supervised by Dr. Robbie
Goodhue (Geology Department, TCD) and Ms Susan Bioletti (Library
Preservation, TCD).

A significant part of this study is an examination of the dust,
which is potentially hazardous to the collection. Various analytical
techniques (x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, scanning electron
microscopy, transmitted light microscopy, Raman spectroscopy) will
be employed in the study. The types, sources, accumulation rates,
and location of dust will be monitored in addition to complete
analysis of the existing dust. The PhD dissertation will provide
scientific information and recommendations which will help to
address the dust issue in the future management of TCD's
irreplaceable heritage collection. The research area is of
considerable International interest and the project supervisors are
on the management committee of the European Science Foundations'
Committee of Senior Officials for Scientific and Technical Research
(COST) Action D42: Chemical Interactions between Cultural Artefacts
and Indoor Environment (EnviArt).

Candidates should have a first class or upper second class honours
degree in Conservation / Environmental Science / Chemistry / Geology
/ or an MSc in an appropriate field.

Applications for this studentship (including C.V. and the names and
contact details of two referees) should be sent to
