Van Gogh's paint surfaces are very characteristic- was there
something he was adding or doing to his paint to achieve this
distinctive look? This talk will explore recent research into Van
Gogh's materials and techniques using historically accurate
reconstructions of his grounds and paints in an effort to understand
the particular flow-properties and handling qualities we see on his
paintings. The concept of re-creating artists' materials with as
much historical accuracy as possible will be explored, with its
inherent problems and the new knowledge that results. This research
is the outcome of a 4 year project supported by the Netherlands
Organisation for Scientific Research (N W O), the Netherlands
Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (FOM-AMOLF), and the
Canadian Conservation Institute. It was hosted by the Netherlands
Institute of Cultural Heritage (ICN) in Amsterdam. Working closely
with the Van Gogh Museum, Van Gogh's paintings were examined with a
variety of techniques, then reconstructions were prepared based on
historical recipes and analytical results from the actual paintings.
