Stipends for South American conservators to attend workshop on
iron-gall ink on paper

The Conservation and Restoration Department of the Brazilian Studies
Institute (IEB) of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil is pleased to
announce the award of a grant from the Getty Foundation in support
of a collection survey and workshop on "The History and Treatment of
Works in Iron Gall Ink" October 20-24, 2008 in Sao Paulo. Ten
stipends will be available for conservators and collection managers
from South America to attend the workshop, which will be conducted
by conservation scientist Dr. Han Neevel and conservator Birgit
Reissland from the ICN in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and with
lectures and assistance by conservator Valeria Orlandini, from The
Library of Congress, in Washington D.C., USA. The program also
includes a full day of lectures by local and South American
conservators, and practical training sessions. Stipends will cover
round-trip travel (in economy-class airfare) from the participant's
country of origin, and subsistence (hotel for 5 nights in double
occupancy).

This four-day workshop focuses on one of the most vulnerable media
problems found on documents and works of art on paper. Workshop
topics include; the production of inks from historic recipes,
historic drawing and writing techniques, identification, examination
and classification of deterioration, the execution of stabilization
treatment options (including the use of calcium phytate method), and
risk assessment of collections. The lectures include presentation of
papers and posters by participants. The presenters will come from
South and Central American and Caribbean countries. Papers will be
given in the presenters' native language (either in Spanish or
Portuguese) and simultaneous translation in English will be
provided. Posters will be printed in the presenters' native language
including abstracts in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

This survey and workshop were designed so that participants can
learn both formally and informally by discussions of topics covered
in the four-day program, in question-and-answer sessions, and in
further discussions with colleagues during the event. This will also
help to facilitate interchanges of ideas, experience and knowledge
among the participants and the instructors. The workshop is open to
qualified paper and book conservators and collection managers that
have a minimum of three years of experience working in museum,
library and archives collections. Candidates should be citizens of
and living in South and Central American and Caribbean countries.
Priority will be given to those participants who cannot receive any
institutional support to attend the meeting. Applications will be
reviewed and ranked by a selection committee; selection criteria
will be based on professional qualifications, need, participation in
conservation associations, institutional affiliation, as well as
capability and willingness to disseminate information of this topic
to colleagues after the course.

Deadline: Applications are due July 15, 2008. Applicants will be
notified of their standing in the application procedures by August
1, 2008.
