Conference: Conservation in Context--addendum

From: Katharine St Paul <kstpaul<-a>
Date: Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Final speaker confirmed for Conference 'Conservation in Context' at
the Michael Faraday Museum at the Royal Institution (RI) on 25 July
2008.

Barry Knight, Head of Conservation Research at the British Library
has been confirmed as the final speaker to join the programme
'Conservation in Context'.

SurveNIR project <URL:http://www.science4heritage.org/survenir> is
an EU co-funded project to develop a new instrument for
non-destructive determination of important properties of historical
paper, such as tensile strength, pH, and lignin content, based on
Near Infrared Spectroscopy.

The SurveNIR technique is a surveying tool for book and archival
collections. It is designed to be used by curators, preservation
staff and conservators. The results can be presented appropriate to
the need, e.g. a sample of books across the institution's holdings,
or an in-depth analysis of an individual item. Because the results
are derived from absolute measurements, these can be reliably
repeated in coming years to follow the changes which occur, in an
item or across a collection. The results can feed into prioritising
decisions about storage, treatment, staffing.

Many important conservation projects are often neglected after
completion and important knowledge that could be shared is lost.
This conference, held jointly with the Historical Group of the Royal
Society of Chemistry, will discuss conservation science,
conservation of objects and conservation heritage projects in their
historical, contemporary and national contexts. There will be a
reception on the evening of July 24, 2008. The evening event will be
opened by the Director of the Royal Institution, Professor Baroness
Greenfield CBE.

The programme includes David Saunders (British Museum), Professor
Robin Clark (UCL), Dr Vincent Daniels (Research Fellow at the
RCA/V&A), Bronwyn Ormsby (Tate Gallery), Helen Hughes (English
Heritage), Katherine Doyle (MLA Prism Fund), Angela Karsten (English
Heritage), Rupert Harris (Rupert Harris Conservation), Mark
Sandiford and Daniel Gillberg (Sandiford and Mapes), Anthony Peers
(Rodney Melville and Partners), Katharine St Paul, Lenore Symons and
Frank James (RI).

Registration for the meeting including, lunch, coffee, tea and the
evening reception, is UKP70 standard, UKP40 concessions, RI and RSC
HG members.

This conference is sponsored by Royal and Sunalliance and Harrow
Green, held jointly with the Historical Group of the Royal Society
of Chemistry and in association with MLA Prism Fund. Booking on
