Emil Bosshard died in February of 2006 at his home in Bischofszell,
Switzerland. He had bravely fought against his illness for about two
years and was barely sixty-one. Yet, during his career Emil had
become a highly respected paintings conservator. After an early
training with Thomas Brachert at the Schweizerisches Institut fur
Kunstwissenschaft (SIK) in Zurich, Emil interned at the Rijksmuseum
in Amsterdam, later becoming its Deputy Paintings Conservator. He
then collaborated with Nathan Stolow and was one of the first
conservators of the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI).

Between 1975 and 1984 Emil was Chief of Conservation at the SIK
where he succeeded Thomas Brachert. He then moved to Lugano to work
for Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza. Over the years, he not only assured
the Collection the highest level of professional expertise and care
but also published on various conservation issues in several
international scholarly periodicals.

In recent years, together with his wife Veronika van der Bruggen, a
skilled paper conservator, Emil conducted a successful private
practice from their home in Bischofszell. Throughout his career Emil
worked on many different aspects of conservation's techniques and
research. From Tuchleinmalerei to Panorama conservation problems to
a systemization of technological research, to fostering the
development of IR Reflectography, as well as issues of art works in
transit.

The contributions in this book have been chosen to reflect Emil's
wide range of interests in the field of conservation but also of
specific aspects of art history. They present an in-depth analysis
of the painting techniques of artists as diverse as El Greco,
Varlin, Claude Lorrain or Fitz Hugh Lane. Contributions on issues of
iconography, attribution, art historical criticism as well as his
personal collection of African textiles, provide an even wider
sample of Emil's world.

To describe Emil only as a conservator would be diminishing: he was
an entertaining and competent lecturer, an excellent copyist, an
eminent and active connoisseur of modern jazz and an amateur
musician and carpenter. Divided into four sections--a re-print of
Emil's most relevant writings, technical studies, art historical
essays and personal memories--this book is a tribute to a loyal
friend and trusted colleague.
