The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is an institution of art and history whose
purpose is to exhibit a representative overview of Dutch art and
history beginning in the Middle Ages, in addition to important
aspects of European and Asiatic art, for a national and
international public. It is the mission of the Rijksmuseum to
present the collection in a way that conveys the exceptional
significance of this national treasure and gives meaning to art
objects in a historical context. The Conservation and Restoration
Department announces a job opening in the Paintings Restoration
Studio for a Paintings Conservator (m/f) for 36 hours per week for a
period of one year, beginning 1 September 2008,

During the renovation of the Rijksmuseum, the museum seeks to
familiarize the public with its collection by exhibiting it in other
venues. Therefore, one of the responsibilities of the Department of
Conservation and Restoration is to prepare objects for display in
other institutions. The total number of travelling paintings from
the Rijksmuseum's collection at any given time can vary from a
single work of art to a complete travelling exhibition involving
dozens of paintings. In conjunction with a major upcoming exhibition
that will travel to Canada and the United States, the museum seeks
to expand its conservation department with the addition of a
paintings conservator to support the current staff.

Job description: In order to fill this position, we are seeking an
experienced paintings conservator who is capable of working
independently. Primary responsibilities include the restoration of a
number of paintings from the collection in preparation for
exhibition. In addition to carrying out conservation projects and
related research, the successful applicant will contribute to the
department in the following ways:

    Carrying out conservation work and related scientific research
    with colleagues and/or other researchers and reporting the
    findings

    Assessing the physical state of objects and preparing condition
    reports in conjunction with loan requests

    Monitoring the physical state of objects in the collection in
    order to identify processes of deterioration and implement
    preventative or corrective measures

    Participating in project-based activities, including involvement
    in consultations, discussions, and administrative tasks related
    to conservation projects

Requirements:

    Academic training in conservation and restoration or  SRAL, or a
    comparable degree in paintings conservation from a foreign
    institution

    Experience working with colleagues from other disciplines

    A spoken or written command of Dutch (or a willingness to learn
    Dutch relatively quickly) and a command of two modern languages,
    one of which must be English

    Good social and communication skills

    A pro-active, analytical and problem-solving attitude

    A focus on development

    Honesty regarding conservation ethics and aesthetic issues

    The ability to be flexible and handle stressful situations

This position is for a one year appointment.

Salary: Depending on training and experience, the gross salary will
be a minimum of 2.549 Euro and a maximum of 3.335 Euro per month
based on a full work week of 36 hours, excluding 8% holiday
allowance and 1.25% end of the year allowance. The CAO for
independent state museums is applicable.
