Etnographic Conservator
Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo

A permanent position for conservation of ethnographic material is
available at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo,
starting November 1, 2008.

The Museum of Cultural History is one of Norway's largest cultural
history museums.  In addition to an extensive ethnographic
collection representing cultures from around the world, it also
houses the country's largest archaeological collection ranging from
prehistoric to Medieval periods, including the Viking Ship
collection at Bygdoy.  The museum also contains a considerable
ecclesiastical Medieval collection, antiquities from the
Mediterranean region, the country's largest numismatic collection
and a runic archive.

The Museum of Cultural History employs approximately 110 permanent
staff in addition to project staff.  The Museum is organized into
six departments and a central administration.  For more information

Tasks and areas of responsibility:

    Conservation of ethnographic material
    Analytical investigations of the collections
    Preventive conservation of the ethnographic collections, in
    cooperation with other conservation staff members
    Involvement with loans, national and international
    Involvement with in-house exhibitions, including installation
    Involvement in the revision and re-housing of the Museum's

    Presentations and guidance within conservation-related areas of
    interest, external and internal

Requirements for the position

   Formal training within objects conservation at the Master's
   level, or corresponding training and experience
   Practical experience with conservation of ethnographic material
   Relevant museum experience
   Driver's license

The following will also be considered when evaluating applicants:

    Practical experience within preventive conservation
    Experience with analytical equipment
    Experience with research-related investigations
    Level of computer skills and database experience
    Involvement with international projects

The successful candidate possesses excellent communication skills,
oral and written (Norwegian and/or English).  Candidates not fluent
in one of the Scandinavian languages must be motivated to learn
Norwegian.  She/he is systematic, structured and is capable of
working both independently or as a part of a team. All employees of
the University of Oslo (UiO) must sign an agreement which secures
UiO's rights to research-related results.
