The British Museum

Contract: 10 month fixed term contract

UKP 21,484 - 25,172 pa (depending on qualifications and experience)

The British Museum is currently recruiting a scientist to work
within the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research. The
post holder will have two principal areas of activity. First, to
undertake a series of small research projects focussing on
archaeological organic residues, in particular (but not exclusively)
residues preserved in association with archaeological ceramics.
Second, to develop analytical protocols for the study of natural
organic colorants and dyestuffs in the wide range of archaeological
and ethnographic material types represented in the Museum's
collection. In addition you will be required to provide routine
scientific services to address a range of curatorial and
conservation enquiries, and to disseminate results and information
through reports, publication and lecturing etc.

The ideal candidate will have a strong science background with
experience of project design and the application of a range of
analytical techniques (especially GC-MS and HPLC) to the study of
the technology, deterioration and preservation of amorphous organic
materials from museum objects. Previous experience of working with
organic residues from archaeological ceramics and/or dyes and
organic colourants would be an advantage. Good organisational and
communication skills are essential.
