Conservation and Repair of Architectural Metalwork
BC3D118-12-15 January 2009

This course covers the conservation of structural metalwork,
architectural features and statuary.  It includes both ferrous and
non-ferrous metals, with tuition on a wide range of repair
techniques from leading practitioners.  The course includes the
methods of manufacture and shaping of ferrous metals, the history of
their use, deterioration, surveys, practical cleaning methods,
surface preparation and coatings, and specifying metalwork repairs.
There will be the popular 'hands-on' opportunity in the Forge when
students will be able to try out 'needle-gunning', arc and gas
welding, flame-cutting and forging at the hearth.

Non-residential course fee UKP450.  Fully inclusive residential

The Historic Interior:  Commissioning and Managing Conservation
    Research

    Primarily designed as a course for project conservators,
    property managers, curators, historic building inspectors,
    conservation officers and conservation architects who wish to
    undertake or commission research in historic interiors to gain
    an understanding of their development.  The course will outline
    the different methods of analysis commonly undertaken as part of
    the investigation of historic interiors with reference to
    completed case studies. During the course delegates will be set
    short assignments and asked to prepare research strategies and
    devise representation programmes, based on given documentation.

An Introduction to the Conservation of Transport and Industrial
Collections

    The course will deliver the fundamental information needed to
    understand the role and the approach of the conservator involved
    in the care of a transport or technology collection and to
    extend their knowledge of conservation principles and
    techniques.

    The workshop will concentrate on the role of the conservator and
    approaches to conserving the many different materials
    encountered in transport and technology collections,
    preventative conservation, handling, storage and display and on
    environmental monitoring and control.  The final day will
    include sessions on accessing information on conservation.
