    The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) is seeking a highly
    motivated person to fill an important position in the
    Conservation Department. The Preventative Conservator plays a
    critical role in the care of the national collection.  Under the
    supervision of the Preventive Conservator Manager the occupant
    of this position represents the Objects, Paper, Paintings,
    Textiles and Loans and Exhibitions conservation sections in all
    aspects of preventive conservation.

    The Preventive Conservator will assume responsibility for
    environmental monitoring of all areas in which the collection is
    housed and liaise on behalf of the department with Building
    Services, Security, Registration and other sections and external
    clients to ensure optimum conditions for the collection and
    works in the custody of the NGA.

    The Preventive Conservator assist the Preventive Conservation
    Manager to research, develop, implement and maintain policies,
    guidelines and reports on all aspects of the care of the
    collection and assist in delivering training programs.

    This is a full time non-ongoing position with a 12 month term.

    The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) is one of Australia's
    major institutions and holds an extensive textile collection.
    The NGA's Asian textile collection and Ballet Russes theatre
    costumes will provide an exciting opportunity to conserve a wide
    variety of textile works.

    The Textile Conservator is based in the Conservation Department,
    which employs conservators specialising in paper, paintings,
    objects, textiles and preventive conservation. The textile
    conservation team consists of 3 textile conservators and a part
    time conservation assistant.

    The Textile Conservator would be an active member of a small
    focused team preparing works for exhibition and loan including
    treatments, research and analysis, preparation for display,
    packing for loan and storage.

    Position requirements:

        *   Appropriate qualifications and/or experience in the area
            of textile conservation

        *   A good knowledge of materials and methods used in the
            manufacture of a wide range of textiles and costumes

        *   Demonstrated knowledge of the method of technical and
            scientific examination and conservation treatment of
            textiles

        *   Well developed interpersonal and communication skills
            and the ability to work as a positive team member
