Scientist: Vitreous materials
Department of Conservation and Scientific Research
The British Museum

The British Museum is currently recruiting a scientist to work
within the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research. The
postholder will undertake research and other investigations into the
archaeometric aspects of the identification of the materials and
technology of glass, enamel and vitreous glazed artefacts, and will
address issues related to the deterioration and conservation of such
materials. A particular aim would be to investigate the
deterioration of glass and enamels in the collections of the British
Museum. In addition, the postholder will be required to provide
routine scientific services to address a range of curatorial and
conservation enquiries, and to disseminate results and information
through reports, publication and lecturing etc.

The ideal candidate will have a strong science or materials science
background with experience of project design and the application of
a range of analytical techniques such as ICP-AES, XRF, XRD, SEM-EDX,
optical microscopy, Raman, FT-IR and IC, which you wish to apply to
the study of glass, enamel and vitreous glazed artifacts and
materials from museum collections. In this post you will combine
study of the materials and technology of artefacts to enhance
understanding of the Museum collections with the study of their
deterioration and conservation. Previous experience of investigation
of archaeological glass or other vitreous materials would be an
advantage. Good organizational, communication and research skills
are essential, combined with an ability to work in
multi-disciplinary project teams and to disseminate your work to a
range of audiences.

Further information and the application pack will be available on
the Museum website from 12 January, 2009 at
